In his initial public address since being diagnosed with cancer, King Charles III conveyed his appreciation to the public for their support, stating it brought him “the greatest comfort and encouragement,” as per an official statement.
“I would like to extend my deepest thanks for the numerous messages of support and well wishes I have received in recent days. As anyone who has faced cancer knows, such kind sentiments are a source of immense comfort and motivation,” read the statement.
The King also emphasized how his diagnosis has heightened his respect for organizations aiding cancer patients. “My enduring admiration for their unwavering care and commitment is now even stronger due to my own personal journey,” the statement continued.
Last Monday, Buckingham Palace disclosed that Charles, aged 75, had been diagnosed with an unspecified form of cancer and would be scaling back his public engagements while undergoing treatment.
The condition was detected following his admission to a London hospital last month for a corrective procedure concerning an enlarged prostate, according to palace sources. However, prostate cancer has been ruled out, as confirmed by a royal source to CNN, though no further details were provided.
Despite medical advice to withdraw from public appearances, the palace asserted that Charles would continue fulfilling state obligations and administrative tasks.
On Tuesday afternoon, the King was observed departing the capital via helicopter from Buckingham Palace. Shortly before, Prince Harry was spotted arriving at Charles’ residence in London.
Charles is anticipated to receive his customary daily red boxes containing government documents, enabling him to review state papers from home. It’s understood that his weekly meetings with the prime minister will persist, with alternate arrangements made if medical counsel advises reducing in-person interactions.
While updates from the palace have remained optimistic, the news has understandably caused concern. It’s been just over 17 months since Charles ascended to the throne following the passing of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.
Prince William, Charles’ son and the next in line to the throne, along with Queen Camilla, are expected to undertake additional public duties to compensate for Charles’ absence.
